U.S. corn planting nearly complete

Even with more wet, cool conditions in many areas of the Midwest, there was solid corn and soybean planting progress over the past week.

As of Sunday, USDA reports 93% of corn has been planted, up 6% from last week, 13% more than this time last year and 4% ahead of the five year average. 71% of the crop has emerged, compared to 50% a year ago and 62% on average. 71% of corn is in good to excellent condition, up 4% from last week.

For soybeans, 53% is planted, up 15% from a week ago and 9% ahead of a year ago but 4% slower than the five year average. 24% has emerged, compared to 15% last year and 23% on average.

91% of spring wheat is planted, compared to 75% a year ago and 91% on average, with 70% emerged, compared to 42% last year and 68% on average, and 85% of the crop is in good to excellent shape.

63% of winter wheat has headed, down 3% from last year and 5% from the five year average. 66% of winter wheat’s in good to excellent condition, unchanged from a week ago and 21% more than a year ago.

67% of U.S. pastures and rangelands are in good to excellent shape, up 3% from last week and 8% from last year.
