Restaurant features may reflect lack of Gulf seafood

There may not be much of an impact yet on wholesale and consumer meat prices from the now roughly two month old Gulf of Mexico oil spill but according to University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist Darrell Mark, we may see some effect at the restaurant level.

The U.S. restaurant industry took a big hit from economic woes and Mark says was only recently showing signs of rebounding.

Mark believes that if there’s a shortage of Gulf seafood, you’ll probably notice it in restaurant features, “What you might end up seeing more often now is instead of featuring certain seafood items, particularly shrimp, is featuring of combinations of types of surf and turf.”

Mark adds the primary reason he doesn’t see much of an impact on meat prices is the ratio of consumption of shrimp when compared to pork or beef but says there will be at least some effect in Gulf Coast states.
