Crops looking good in eastern Nebraska

“One of the best looking crops I’ve seen since I’ve been farming.”

That’s how Don Timm of Lyons, Nebraska describes his corn and soybean crops this summer.  And Timm says the corn is maturing well this year, which he hopes will make for a more normal harvest season this fall.

“I think we’re a little ahead on the heat degree units this year, so the corn this year might actually mature a little better than it did last year from what we’re seeing,” Timm says. “There’s nothing to hold this corn—or these beans—back, at this point.  It’s just a matter of having the sunlight for the beans and the heat degree units for the corn to finish them out.”

Since June 1st, Timm has received 24 inches of rain on his east-central Nebraska farm.  Average annual rainfall in that area is 28 inches.
