Harvest time rail, waterway shipping improves

It’s easy to become frustrated by delays at the elevator that create harvest slowdowns because of nowhere to go with soybeans, corn or wheat. Those delays are often signs of bigger backlogs of railcars or barges. But this year those backlogs seem to be fewer. At least that’s the observation of Mike Steenhoek, the executive director of the Soy Transportation Coalition, a group that, in the past, has been critical of cost and availability of rail transportation. “The overall feedback has been pretty positive,” says Steenhoek, referring to what he hears from agricultural shippers. He adds that rail companies are doing a good job of investing in infrastructure.
