Rapid harvest, reduced yields

For Dick O’Neal who farms near Columbus, Indiana, in eastern Bartholomew County, less than a half inch of rain from the first of July until just recently took its toll on both corn and soybeans.

“Quite dramatically in fact,” said O’Neal. “Although corn survived much better than I ever dreamed, our crop was probably about two thirds on corn, but we only had about a third of a bean crop, overall we have to pleased with what we did have.”

O’Neal and his brother Dennis began the 2010 harvest in mid-August and finished in mid-September, which is when they typically begin harvest.
