An update on BYO–Blend Your Own Ethanol

Most experts agree that if the ethanol industry is going to continue to grow, infrastructure development is vital.  A big piece of that infrastructure will be ethanol blender pumps, giving drivers of flex fuel vehicles more options to use ethanol–be it E10 E15, E30, E40 or E85.  Several state and industry programs already offer incentives to petroleum marketers to install blender pumps.  And just last week, the USDA announced that blender pump grants and loans will be made available through REAP—the Rural Energy for American Program.  It’s part of the Obama administration’s goal of installing 10,000 flexible fuel pumps nationwide within five years. Ron Lamberty is the vice president of market development for ACE—the American Coalition for Ethanol.  He also heads up the BYO (Blend Your Own) Ethanol program, which encourages petroleum marketers to install blender pumps.  At the recent Ethanol Issues Forum in Omaha, Lamberty gave us an update on the BYO effort.  He also talked about what retailers are saying about E15.  (Note: this interview was recorded just prior to the USDA’s announcement.)
