New Hormel product targets malnourished

Hormel has launched a turkey spread called Spammy™, and says it will provide a million cans of it this year to fight world hunger, specifically in Guatemala.

“Hormel Foods sought to create a product high in protein to help serve malnourished and poverty-stricken communities worldwide,” said Jeffrey Ettinger, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer at Hormel Foods, quoted in a news release issued by Hormel. “Our company has years of experience in creating shelf-stable proteins, so we employed our expertise to create this new product.”

Spammy™ is only intended for use through the anti-hunger program. Its high protein composition is specifically created for malnourished people.

To ensure that the product delivered the hoped for results, Hormel has been distributing it to Guatemala family centers and orphanages for about 18 months. The company also donated more than 100,000 cans of Spammy™ to Haiti after the January 2010 earthquake.

Hormel is working with a couple of humanitarian groups to distribute Spammy™, Food For The Poor, an organization that raises funds and provides assistance to the poor in Latin America and the Caribbean, and Caritas Arquidiocesana, a charity that works to relieve poverty.

Progress is already being seen, according to Robin Mahfood, president and chief executive officer for Food For The Poor.

“The children who eat Spammy™ are more active, their grades are improving, and overall, they are happier and healthier,” said Mahfood, quoted in the release.

Silgan Containers and Smyth Companies are donating all of the cans and labels for Spammy™.

Cash donations made through a special website to Food for the Poor go directly and fully to purchase the product at cost, according to the release.
