Export enhancement programs pay dividends
A couple of federal grant programs have made it possible to boost commodity exports. Wheat growers have been one commodity growing community to benefit, but Shannon Schlecht with U.S. Wheat Associates says the U.S. economy has also benefited. Schlecht cites the organization’s own research indicating that for every dollar spent to promote exports, $115 has found its way into the general economy. There is concern, however, that the Market Access Program, or MAP, and the Foreign Market Development Program will come under greater scrutiny because of the federal deficit.
