Kenny Wallace proud of farmer connection

A well-known NASCAR driver has no problem speaking out for corn-based ethanol fuel and for those who grow the corn that is a feedstock for ethanol production.

By all accounts, Kenny Wallace is proud to have the words “Family Farmers” prominently displayed on his #09 Toyota that more often than not, keeps him finishing in the top ten in NASCAR Nationwide Series races. He also speaks highly of the ethanol that powers his car.

“It’s a high performance fuel, you know, it burns clean and makes a lot of horsepower,” said Wallace prior to Saturday’s STP 300 race at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois. “We have no problem with ethanol.”

Just before Saturday’s race, in which Wallace finished seventh, he told Brownfield what he now knows about the corn growers who sponsor his car.

“I’ve learned what [farmers] are up against,” he said. “They have a lot of people that are hard on them because they feel like the farmers are the reason for high food prices, and I’m here to defend them. And then, of course, there are a lot of people that don’t like ethanol, and I’m here to defend that.”

NASCAR racers burn a blend of 15 percent ethanol and 85 percent gasoline.
