Spring wheat crop gets closer look

The Wheat Quality Council is touring spring wheat country this week, estimating the yield and quality of this year’s spring wheat and durum crops.

Ben Handcock, the executive director of the council, says this year’s delegation is the largest ever, topping 70 people. Handcock speculates that people may be curious to see if the crop is as bad as they’ve heard it is, he said, speaking to North Dakota farm broadcaster Al Gustin.

“I expect we’re going to see some decent wheat, but it’s going to be later than we’re used to,” said Handcock. “The last report I saw, about half of it was headed out, and so that’s a little different than normal at this stage of the game.”

The spring wheat quality tour runs through Thursday.
