For chickens, reducing stress increases productivity

Chet Utterback maintains that chickens aren’t very fussy about their surroundings. “If they have food, light and water, they’re a relatively happy creature,” said Utterback, in an interview with Brownfield. Besides, he says, if chickens are under stress, they won’t lay eggs. Utterback manages the University of Illinois’s poultry research farm outside Urbana, Illinois, and says it’s important that if people want eggs raised in a cage-free environment, that they are provided that choice. He adds, however, that if all eggs are raised that way, the cost will be much higher than the current going rate of $1.65 a dozen, making the protein-packed food a further reach for those who need eggs the most and can afford the higher cost the least.
