Iowa’s corn yield estimate down 10 bushels

Iowa’s corn yield estimate went from 177 a month ago to 167 bushels per acre this month.

Iowa Corn Growers Association president Kevin Ross of Minden says he wasn’t expecting that much of a drop.

“It’s been a tough crop to gauge,” Ross says. “It’s going to be interesting what the final number ends up at—because that could still be off by a fair amount.  Now that number might be low, because there’s some really good corn out there in spots and there’s a lot of spots that are a little bit marginal.”

Ross says the state’s yield reduction also likely reflects severe wind and hail damage to crops in southwest Iowa that occurred in late August.  At least nine southwestern Iowa counties reported significant storm damage.
