Nebraska growers should monitor stalk quality
As Nebraska’s corn crop heads towards the finish line, growers should watch for possible stalk quality issues.
“Stress causes a lot of issues concerning the potential for stalk rot later in the year,” says Channel Seeds agronomist Doug Gloystein of Hastings. “We are seeing some gray leaf spot pop up, as well as some Goss’s Wilt in some fields. So I think it’s very important for growers to monitor what some of those stresses may do to us—not only in the yield category, but also in stalk quality this fall.”
As for yield potential, Gloystein says he’s seeing a lot of variability within fields. But he says, in those fields that escaped wind and hail damage, yields should be “very, very good”.
