NACD past president says conservation matters

The 2012 Farm Bill is the biggest concern right now of the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD). Ohio producer Steve Robinson, Past President of the NACD, tells Brownfield he’s seen a lot of Farm Bills over the years – where conservation has taken some cuts. With the tight budget situation, he says, they’re willing to take some cuts this time – up to a point.

“The cost share practices and the things that are in place, that’s a good tool and we’re making good use of that. We’re just trying to protect that as well as we can to keep doing the good job that we do.”

Robinson says conservation is important to producers and it’s come a long way, “You know, we don’t see a lot of brown snow like we used to anymore – conservation IS doing its job. But, what I’ve learned in all my years is, once you do a conservation practice, it’s not done forever. It does wear out,” Robinson says, “You need to do them again.”

Robinson says everyone involved in the next Farm Bill needs to be respectful of that fact and keep that in mind.
