Young Farmers provide a great opportunity

Indiana Farm Bureau’s Young Farmer Program was created over 40 years ago as an avenue to help young men and women become successful in the agriculture industry.  Marion County Farm Bureau Young Farmer Committee Co-Chair Katie Thomas says Young Farmers is a great way to tell the message of agriculture. “Coming from an agricultural background like so many of us are,” she says, “it’s important for us to be involved so we can tell our story.  We can connect with the consumer and have a more involved conversation about what the farmers and those involved with the agriculture industry do.  That we provide the food, fuel and fiber of our everyday lives.”

Thomas tells Brownfield Marion County’s Young Farmers group has created programs to try to meet the needs of all their members.  She says their group has the leaders, the planners and the marketers of the group that plan different events and use different forms of media to reach out; the volunteers that work closely with Gleaner’s Food Bank; and the educators that are building relationships within the community and the county to provide Ag In the Classroom programs to educate the youth.

Thomas says activities like those help to reinforce the importance of agriculture to the world’s food, fuel and fiber.
