Kansas expects above-average wheat crop, early harvest

Participants in last week’s Kansas winter wheat tour are estimating total production in the state could reach 404 million bushels.

If that happens, it would be the first time since 2003 that the Kansas crop has surpassed the 400-million bushel mark.

The estimate is based on a statewide average yield of 49-point-one bushels per acre.

Tour participants also found the crop running two to three weeks ahead of normal in its development.  Overall, the crop was about 75 percent headed and some analysts predict that the wheat harvest could get underway in extreme southern Kansas by the end of May.
