Another successful Ice Cream Social

To celebrate National Ice Cream Month the American Dairy Association of Indiana held its 23rd Ice Cream Social on the Monument Circle last Friday.  Deb Osza, General Manager of the ADAI says the event is a great way to highlight how ice cream can play a part in a healthy diet.  “It’s good for you,” she says.  “It has calcium and protein and a lot of the things we need – so ice cream can be a really healthy treat.”  Osza says they ecstatic to celebrate July as National Ice Cream month.

The benefactor from last week’s Ice Cream Social was the Diabetes Youth Foundation of Indiana.  Jenna Holt is their executive director; she says the event provides several benefits.

“Number one, we were able to raise a lot of money for kids,” she says.  “Our camp costs roughly $1,000 per week, per kid.  We charge the family $350 and even then we still help another 40 to 50 percent of our families – so that right there is HUGE.”  Aside from that, Holt tells Brownfield the Ice Cream Social is an opportunity spread awareness about what diabetics can and cannot do.  “A lot of people think we can’t have ice cream,” she says. “But in fact we can.  It’s all about moderation, monitoring, and taking care of yourself.”
