Boehlje: Farm bill passage not likely in 2012

Speaking Thursday at a seed company field day in eastern Nebraska, Purdue University ag economist Dr. Michael Boehlje said he doubts that Congress will be able to pass a new farm bill in 2012.

Pushing the farm bill into 2013, Boehlje says, will create a whole new set of challenges, including a smaller baseline budget and what Boehlje thinks will be a Congressional outcry over large crop insurance indemnities that will be paid out for drought-related losses in 2012.

Boehlje was the keynote speaker at the Hoegemeyer Hybrids Homecoming Field Day near Hooper, Nebraska.   After his speech, he visited with Brownfield’s Ken Anderson about the farm bill, crop insurance and other issues.
