West Nile and EEE on the rise

The recent rains in some areas have been just enough to trigger resurgence of the mosquito population and with it resurgence in West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.  Dr. Darlene Konkle is a veterinarian with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture says these diseases tend to pop-up in the fall in a normal year and seem to be more prevelent this year.  There are effective vaccines for the diseases which are usually administered in the spring but it’s not too late to administer now.

If you did vaccinate this spring you may want to consider a booster as it has been a long summer and the threat remains as long as the mosquitoes do. To go with the vaccination program, try to eliminate any standing water around the barns and stables where mosquitoes might hatch.
