EAB found in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin

Add Trempealeau County to the list of Wisconsin counties where the Emerald Ash Borer has been found. The State Department of Agriculture says the invasive beetle was recently found in Perrot State Park along the Mississippi River just northwest of the Village of Trempealeau.

Previously the pest was found down-river in La Crosse, Vernon and Crawford Counties. It has also been found across the river in Winona and Houston Counties in Minnesota and Allamakee County, Iowa.

This brings to 13 the total number of counties in the Badger State where EAB has been found, these four on the western side and Brown, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Rock, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha on the eastern side of the state.

Since first arriving in the United States through Michigan in 2002, Emerald Ash Borer has spread to 15 states from New York to Missouri as well as the Canadian Provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The larvae of the insect feed on the inner bark of ash trees disrupting the flow of water and nutrients and eventually killing the tree. The most common culprit in the spread has been the transportation of firewood from infected areas to non-infected areas.
