EHG confirmed in deer in 5 Wisconsin counties

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has now confirmed EHG in dead deer in Columbia, Rock, Dane, Sauk and Waukesha counties with tests pending on deer from Iowa, Jefferson and Marquette counties. Results should be back from the lab at Michigan State University in one to two weeks. DNR will not take any more samples of deer from the counties where the disease is confirmed but they do ask that people continue to report sick or dead deer found in those counties.

Wildlife officials say there is no risk to people or pets from deer that have died of EHD and that the venison is safe to eat. Deer carcasses can be left on the landscape to decompose. The DNR will not be collecting or removing deer that have died as a result of this outbreak.

The outbreak should end once cold weather and frost sets in killing the midges that spread the virus.
