The good, the bad, and the ugly

Southern Indiana was the epicenter of this year’s drought.  Oaktown, Indiana farmer Craig Williams has finished corn harvest this year and says in his area, there have been no surprises.  “Most of the corn yields have been all over the place,” he says.  “I’ve joked with some people that we’ve had good, we’ve had bad, and we’ve had ugly.  Unfortunately most of it has been ugly.”

Williams tells Brownfield corn yields were zero on the sandier soils but they would see yields increase on improved soil types.

He says they started harvesting beans on Monday. “We got a few beans cut – probably on our worst ground – on the mostly sandy soils,” he says.  “Mostly what we’ve cut has been in the 20’s.”  He adds when they got on to some better soils – like the corn – the yields would improve.  However there weren’t enough of those acres to make up for the poor yields on the lower quality ground.

Williams says he does think the recent rains have benefited the bean crop.
