Frugally fed sheep keep weeds down

MerleAnn Jaster is wise, ambitious and very practical beyond her years. The Lincoln University student doubles as a shepherd at her home in Lafayette County Missouri. Her method for sustaining sheep, albeit not necessarily new, is one that accomplishes a couple of necessary missions. With a little coaxing, her critters develop a taste for otherwise useless and unwanted vegetation. As a result, she raises them on a shoestring and creates a more appealing landscape in the process. In addition, noxious weeds turned into low cost forage inputs are prevented from becoming a wildfire hazard when they inevitably dry. The trick, Miss Jaster tells Brownfield Ag News, is training the sheep to prefer ragweed over clover.
