Following tillage rules

With the late start to the planting season Purdue agronomist Tony Vyn says it important not to fall the three common tillage temptations: too early, too wet, and too often.

“If you’re doing tillage too early just because the weather and the soil looks good; the question becomes how much erosion is going to occur after that tillage event,” he says.  “The other concern is how much rainfall is going to occur that will cause crusting again of the soil.  That could then require another tillage pass.”

Because we’re having a wet spring, he says it doesn’t make sense to do spring tillage more 24 hours in advance of planting.
