A gene to withstand Phytopthora

A team of Purdue University researchers have identified two genes within the soybean genome that are resistant to a soil borne pathogen that causes Phytophthora root and stem rot.

This could lead to the development of soybean cultivars better able to withstand the pathogen Phytopthora.  The Purdue team made the discovery while looking for a genetic answer to resistance to Asian soybean rust.

Phytophthora costs US soybean growers more than $250 million in lost yield each year.
