Northey defends voluntary approach to nutrient reduction

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey continues to fend off critics of the state’s new nutrient reduction strategy.

Environmental groups have attacked the plan, which encourages farmer to voluntarily implement conservation practices.  They want to see the government become more involved in regulating fertilizer applications.

But Northey still believes the carrot is better the stick in getting farmers to adopt new nutrient management practices. 

We visited with Northey at the recent Iowa Farm Bureau Economic Summit in Ames.
