Early corn yields ‘better than expected’

Early harvest results for corn are coming in much better than expected.  So says Rich Nelson, a market analyst with Allendale Inc. in McHenry, Illinois.

“And this is anywhere from southern and central Illinois and the same portions of Indiana, reaching through northern Missouri and dryland acreage in Nebraska as well.  We do have numbers running roughly 20—some people says even up to 40—bushels an acre better than expected for corn,” Nelson says.

While there are still questions about the crop in Iowa and southern Minnesota, Nelson thinks the USDA’s last corn yield estimate of 155 bushels is pretty solid.

“Even if we drop it to 153 in the next couple months, we’re still going to have a record crop of corn waiting for us,” he says.

According to the USDA, seven percent of the U.S. corn crop was harvested, as of Sunday.
