Fostering a future in beef production
Getting and keeping young people in a beef operation is a challenge. Just because someone is born into a cattle enterprise is no guarantee that it will become a career. There are ways, however, to at least make possible a generational transition so that if there is a desire, a young person could consider taking over a parent’s beef operation. Ben Eggers, who manages Sydenstricker Genetics at Mexico, Missouri, a significant provider of registered Angus bulls, was part of a panel discussion concerning how to keep young people in a cattle operation. There is the perception of hard work with little reward, Eggers told Brownfield Ag News. He also talked about the future of the U.S. as a world competitor in beef production.
