Farming to improve the environment
It is said that farmers are less owners of the land than they are stewards of it, doing what they can to leave it in better shape than when they begin farming it. For 50 years, Arlo Van Diest of Webster City, Iowa, has made advancements to make sure that’s true in his case, from keeping soil in place to keeping nutrients to a minimum.
When Arlo Van Diest began farming fifty years ago, he tells Brownfield, it was with a moldboard plow. That gave way to a chisel plow, and that to a heavy disc, until about a decade ago when he began using the implement he uses today.
