Harvest update – Marion and Knox Co. Ohio

Driving around Marion County, north of Columbus, on Monday, October 14, John Buck said it looked like soybean harvest was getting darn close to being done.

“Our yields were mediocre, we weren’t anything spectacular, it was kind of amazing that the top end of the beans got taken out, we just missed a rain that we needed,” said Buck. “I would say mid-40s to the 60s is going to cover about everything around here, even though they looked like they should have been 85 bushels.”

Corn harvest is just getting started with moisture levels in the mid-20s, and from what Buck is hearing early yields are pretty decent, but he says there’s really not enough harvested to get a good feel on corn yields.

Trish Levering who farms near Fredericktown in Knox County Ohio says with soybean harvest finished, they are just getting started in corn.

“Corn yields in our area are going to be pretty strong, test weights might be a little lower normal, but still above 56,” Levering said.

And so far stalk quality is not an issue.

“Stalk quality looks pretty good, even in some hybrids we’ve been watching in the test plots, just some new hybrids coming that we were taking some observations on,” Trish said. “We’ve been pretty pleased with stalk quality and have been pretty fortunate in our area for that.”

When asked about how concerned they were with rain in the forecast, Trish says they’ll deal with what they get, but a little rain she says would help get their rye cover crop established.
