Iowa Climate Statement 2013: Weather extremes will increase

The weather extremes that Iowa farmers have experienced in 2012 and 2013 are likely to become more commonplace as the climate continues to warm and change in the coming decades.

That’s the conclusion of the Iowa Climate Statement, a report released annually by a group of Iowa scientists studying the effects of climate change.  In its 2013 report, the scientists focused on the effects of climate change on farming in Iowa and the potential impact on Iowa’s ag economy.

“Our climate has disrupted agricultural production profoundly during the past two years and is projected to become even more harmful in coming decades as our climate continues to warm and change,” the report says.  It also suggests that farmers will need to adjust their farming and conservation practices to adjust to this new reality.

We discussed the climate statement and some of issues surrounding climate change with one of the report’s lead authors, Gene Takle, director of the Climate Science Program at Iowa State University.
