Riding horses for barter

Among the National FFA awards earned for proficiency in a variety of fields, many are in the equine area. Camber Sannes of the Amherst, Wisconsin FFA Chapter won the proficiency award in equine science entrepreneurship. Camber has been riding for as long as she can remember. What she does to be able to continue to ride is that she works. She barters with her parents who provide horse boarding in exchange for Camber’s labor to maintain the stalls and train horses. To raise, board, train and ride horses is not cheap. That’s why her parents provide support in exchange for labor from Camber, who expects little to nothing for income from competing.

Since getting her first pony at four years old, Sannes has known that horses would always be a part of her life. That’s reinforced by the proficiency award that she brought home from Louisville, Kentucky. Currently, however, she’s preparing for a career in the medical field that will definitely take some of her time away from the horses she’s grown up with.
