Shared values is a process

Terry Fleck, Center for Food Integrity presenting at OFBF Trends and Issues Conference_webSpeaking at the recent Ohio Farm Bureau Trends and Issues Conference, Terry Fleck with the Center for Food Integrity (CFI) talked about agriculture’s social license to operate.

Fleck says that when CFI first started talking about the social license to operate there was some skepticism, but that’s changing.

“What we are seeing now is people actually adopting some of the language, we see companies moving to a more shared values approach, and even those in agricultural production,” Fleck said. “It makes sense to people that its time that we really do reconnect the values and beliefs of today’s food system with consumers because that’s a missing piece.”

Fleck says shared values is a process and not an event we conduct.

“It has to become part of our culture, part of our way of life, but we have to become more comfortable with sharing what it is we do and why we do it,” said Fleck. “It’s going to take some time for this to turn around.”
