Nebraska’s wheat prospects much improved

The prospects for Nebraska’s 2014 winter wheat crop are much improved over last year.

This year’s crop is forecast to be nearly 57 million bushels, up 44 percent from the 2013 crop. The average yield is estimated at 40 bushels per acre, which is up five bushels from a year earlier.

Another big improvement from last year is the number of winter wheat acres that will be harvested. They’re forecast at 1.42 million, which would be up 26 percent from a year ago. That would be 95 percent of the planted acres, well above last year’s 77 percent harvested.
