NRCS committed to the Western Basin of Lake Erie

For the past several years the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) has been providing funding and technical assistance in the Western Basin of Lake Erie.

NRCS Chief Jason Weller says since 2009 NRCS has invested over $46 million in the basin.

“That covers 1.8 million acres of cropland in the basin and over a half million of those acres are specifically targeted on water quality practices, so we’ve had a very focused, proactive effort to address this,” Chief Weller said. “The bottom line is we’re going to stay committed, we’re here to support producers in the basin, but also communities to meet their water quality goals.”

The NRCS Chief tells Brownfield the agency is looking at additional funds for Ohio.

“Recognizing the need in particular to protect those vulnerable soils going into the fall and winter,” said the NRCS Chief. “So yes, we are looking at additional resources we can bring to bear immediately to get good conservation practices in place.”

An announcement could come as early as next week.
