Wisconsin crops could use some rain

It was ideal weather for fairs in Wisconsin last week but soil moistures declined.  The weekly Crop Progress Report from the National Ag Statistics Service Wisconsin Field Office says 43 percent of the state’s topsoil is now short to very short of moisture.  That is compared to 33 percent a week ago.  The third-crop alfalfa and pasture growth have slowed. With 13 percent of the pastures now rated poor to very poor condition.

The Badger State corn crop is still progressing nicely with 82 percent silked and 20 percent in dough as of Sunday.  That is compared to 68 percent silking and 8 percent in dough a week ago although both numbers are below the five-year average.  The corn crop is rated 69 percent good to excellent condition.

Soybeans are 70 percent good to excellent condition with 88 percent blooming and 65 percent setting pods.  That is ahead of the five year average for this date.

Winter wheat harvest is 74 percent complete, well-ahead of normal but oats-for-grain harvest is just 38 percent done, should be 57 percent by now.  Oats yields are reported at 60 to 70 bushels while wheat is running 57 to 70 bushels per acre.
