Indiana corn saw additional stress in August

As harvest nears, USDA is anticipating a pretty good corn crop this year.  Purdue Extension corn specialist Bob Nielsen tells Brownfield he’s certain that there are individual fields and parts of the state that will have fantastic yields.  “But, I guess I question yields,” he says.  “As I’ve looked at fields the past couple of weeks around the state that have developed late season nitrogen deficiency.”

He says field conditions have changed quite a bit over the past month. “I think what we’ve seen through August is simply a higher number of fields that did experience some significant stress during this grain fill period,” he says.  “I’m personally not as confident of as much wide-spread fantastic yield as I was a month ago.”

Nielsen says it will be interesting to see what USDA does with their next yield estimates.  He says the September report includes plant count information as well as kernel number information.

That report – comes out September 11.
