California’s new egg regulations

January 1, 2015 isn’t only a significant day for egg producers in California, it is a significant day for egg producers across the country.

David Inall, Sr. Vice President at United Egg Producers says a lot has happened in the egg business since Proposition 2 was passed in California in 2008.

“There’s been many event during that time and producers have been preparing and been working towards those issues,” Inall said. “And there’s a number of other states that also had some laws come in regarding animal welfare, so the industry has been working through a number of things in that time.”

Inall says in the 7 years since Proposition 2 passed, UEP has been engaged with egg producers across the country in preparation for the new regulations governing egg production in California taking effect on January 1.

“Once it was clear to producers that there was to be an inch requirement and they could understand what that was, those producers who choose to supply into California, whether located in California or outside California, they are now aware of what those rules are,” said the UEP Sr. Vice President.

The new regulations taking effect on January 1 set forth specific requirements for the housing of egg-laying hens and for labeling of eggs to indicate they are California compliant. A number of states have challenged that law saying it interferes with interstate commerce.
