Gov. acknowledges 4-H disappointment

Gov. Kasich talking with 4-H members in Darke Co.Governor Kasich traveled to Darke County on Monday, June 8, to talk avian flu.

The visit was an opportunity to not only highlight safeguards the State is taking to keep avian flu from coming into Ohio, it was also an opportunity for the Governor to share with 4-H members in attendance that he understands their disappointment following the State’s decision to ban all live poultry shows.

“It’s a disappointment, but we wanted to show these young people that we understand their disappointment,” said the Governor. “We were all young once and we were all disappointed at one time or another, but we want them to know that this is something that we bypass or we don’t take seriously, so I’m glad we’re able to be here today.”

Traveling with the Governor, Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture described the ban of all live poultry shows in the state a learning experience for 4-H and FFA members.

“All these programs are designed to be learning opportunities for our young folks to know what it’s like to take an animal project and understand what it is to care and feed and keep them disease free,” said ODA Director Dave Daniels.

The Director also said when the state made the announcement to ban live poultry shows, the focus then turned to those 4-H and FFA members with poultry projects.

“We’ve been working with 4-H and Extension to find other ways for them to complete the projects that they have already started,” Daniels said. “OSU, 4-H and FFA are getting ready to put out guidance documents as to how those things can progress, so we’ve been working with all those stakeholders.”
