Hickey receives Sagamore of the Wabash
The head of the Indiana FFA will retire later this year after serving the organization for nearly 40 years.
Steve Hickey was an ag teacher and FFA advisor for the Shenandoah FFA before being named the executive director of the Indiana FFA Organization 5 years ago.
He tells Brownfield it’s been an honor to serve. “The last five years have been a five year mission field,” he says. “Seeing by the Grace of God how far and how fast we could help Indiana FFA advisors and Indiana FFA members. We succeeded and maybe to a little higher level than we already had.”

During this year’s FFA Convention, Indiana State Department of Agriculture Director Ted McKinney presented Hickey with one of the state’s highest honors – the Sagamore of the Wabash – an award, given by the governor, which recognizes individuals who have contributed to “Hoosier” heritage. “Steve Hickey started as a FFA advisor when I was a state officer – maybe even a year or two before,” he says. “This man and his family have a lifetime of contribution to you and FFA. What a great capstone to his career and tonight, too.”

Hickey says he is honored. “I am more humbled than I have been in a long, long time,” he says. “I’m just very grateful for the blessing of the career I’ve had.”
The state FFA Convention wraps up today.
