Illinois Counties of Greene and Macoupin drenched over the weekend

Heavy rain fell early Sunday morning adding to already saturated fields in the Illinois Counties of Greene and Macoupin.

Macoupin County Farm Bureau Manager Mark Dugger says the rain made a bad situation worse.

“There was still a lot of water prior to this last rain standing, and this last rain has added to that,” Dugger told Brownfield Ag News Monday.  “I mean our ground around here in several sections of the county is saturated, so we’ve got a lot more standing water in the fields and just nowhere for it to go at this point.”

Macoupin County farmer Jason Boente, who also serves as president of the Macoupin County Farm Bureau, says crops are showing the evidence of a wet season.

“Stalks are starting to turn brown, getting some gray leafspot in the corn due to all the moisture,” said Boente.  “There are some fields that are underwater, and it’s hurting the beans.”

Amounts of two to seven inches have been reported.
