July poultry production up 2% on year

The USDA reports poultry production during July was up 2% on the year at 3.972 billion pounds.

Chicken accounted for 3.512 billion pounds, up 4%, with the slaughter and average live weight both 2% higher, at 773.256 million head and 6.05 pounds, respectively.

Turkey came out at 448 million pounds, down 11%, with the kill declining 7% to 19.254 million head and average live weight down more than a pound at 28.99 pounds.

The total live weight of all poultry was 5.252 billion pounds.

Ante-mortem condemnations were 13.194 million pounds, up 16% from July 2014 and 0.25% of the live weight. Post-mortem condemnations were 38.281 million pounds, 4% above a year ago and 0.95% of monthly production.

From January to July 2015, U.S. poultry production is 26.855 billion pounds, 4% more than this time last year.
