Walker seeks ginseng disaster declaration

ginseng

Governor Scott Walker is asking U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack to grant a disaster declaration for ginseng farmers in three Wisconsin counties. It is estimated the farmers lost 28 percent of their crop and 50 percent of their seed to a late freeze in May. The request is for Langlade, Lincoln and Marathon Counties. Wisconsin leads the U.S. in ginseng production and Walker says the losses will likely have an impact for years. A disaster declaration from USDA would make the farmers eligible for emergency loans.
