High oleic soybeans, an option with potential

soybeans (2)_webA Northwest Ohio farmer says he was very pleased with the performance of his high oleic soybeans in 2015.

Dale Profit, who farms in Southern Van Wert County, tells Brownfield the high oleic varieties were his top yielding beans this year.

“This high oleic bean may not be number one every year, but they are very rugged, they’ll stand good weather, they’ll stand bad weather,” said Profit. “I think it’s something that should be in everybody’s portfolio of varieties to raise.”

Profit, who serves on the United Soybean Board, says the oil from high oleic beans adds functionality for frying and baking.

“The end-users are wanting something that meets their criteria and this bean has been designed to do that,” the Van Wert County Ohio farmer said. “If we can get a bean that they like, that will keep them from shopping for some other kind of oil, it’s a win-win for both us and the end-user.”

There are currently 60 high oleic delivery locations in 11 states.
