South Dakota soybean harvest 90 percent complete

Warm, dry weather across South Dakota allowed harvest to progress rapidly this past week, although there was an increased risk for fire. Topsoil moisture is now 58 percent adequate to surplus.  Corn picking is 39 percent done, well ahead of last year, but a little behind average, according to the USDA National Ag Statistics Service.

Soybeans are 90 percent harvested, just a little ahead of last year and the average.  Winter wheat is almost all planted and three-quarters emerged. Sorghum is 66 good to excellent. Sorghum is 38 percent harvested, which is a little behind.

About one-third of South Dakota’s sunflowers are harvested.

The third cutting of alfalfa is about 95 percent done and is 70 percent good to excellent. South Dakota pastures are 50 percent good to excellent, and stock water is 71 percent adequate to surplus.
