Mandatory GMO label could scare consumers
The president of the Iowa Corn Growers Association says requiring a label for all foods containing GMO ingredients has the potential to scare consumers.
Bob Hemaseth says there is no scientific evidence that proves GMO’s are bad.
“But when you do that scare tactic of putting that label on there; I hate to use that (term), but that’s kind of what it is (a scare tactic). We want consumers to know what’s in their food, but GMO’s have bee proven safe and billions of meals have been eaten all across the world with GMO’s in them.”
Speaking to Brownfield at Commodity Classic in New Orleans last week, Hemaseth echoed National Corn Grower support of a voluntary and uniform U.S. labeling law.
However, NCGA president Chip Bowling tells Brownfield a voluntary GMO labeling bill will likely not pass and that a mandatory system is better than no system.
Obviously this man thinks little of American consumers who just want to know what is in their food and how it was grown. GMO labeling is no different than “gluten-free” or “sugar-free” – manufacturers can and should label GMO products and let American consumers decide what they want to put on the table for their families!
