February pork production new monthly high
The USDA reports pork production for February 2016 was a new all-time high for the month.
Pork totaled 2.001 billion pounds, up 3% from February 2015, with one more workday and a 4% increase in the slaughter to 9.428 million head cancelling out a 2 pound decrease in the average live weight to 283 pounds.
Beef came out at 1.885 billion pounds, 7% more than a year ago, with a 5% rise in the kill to 2.290 million head and 17 pound gain for the average live weight to 1,372 pounds.
Red meat production for February was 3.904 billion pounds, 5% above last year.
For 2016 to date, U.S. red meat production is 2% ahead of the 2015 pace at 7.960 billion pounds.
