Wisconsin Farm Bureau property tax assessment reminder

Wisconsin Organic Farm

Wisconsin Farm Bureau is reminding rural land owners to check their property tax assessments this spring.

Director of government relations Paul Zimmerman says crop and pasture acres are taxed under a use-value calculation.

“Based on a formula of raising a corn crop and how that relates to setting a property tax assessment.  So each year farmers get new numbers as far as what their land is valued at.”

He tells Brownfield farmers need to make sure properties are correctly classified in one of five categories.

“Because they’ll find out in December when they get their property tax bill if something was incorrectly classified, (and) that can have an impact on your property tax bill.  So now’s the time for farmers to do their due diligence before they start spring field work.”

The five classifications are agricultural land, agricultural forest, productive forest, undeveloped land and other.

Zimmerman says property owners can contact their local assessor for more information.
