Blunt & McCaskill agree on tariffs – Smith differs

Missouri’s U.S. Senators have similar positions on China’s proposed tariffs on Missouri goods, including ag products. Senator Roy Blunt spoke with reporters in Jefferson City after addressing the Missouri House last week, “I’ve been concerned both publicly, and in the oval office with the president, that a trade war always has unintended consequences and is harder to get out of than it is to get into.”

Senator Claire McCaskill issued a statement saying the administration needs to scale back the situation before it becomes a trade war.

Meanwhile, Republican Congressman Jason Smith has praised President Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum imports which began the back and forth trade threats between the U.S. and China. Magnitude 7 Metals– in Smith’s southeast Missouri district – plans to reopen a shuttered aluminum smelter, in Marston, Missouri.
