Heat builds on the Plains

Across the Corn Belt, cool, dry weather favors reproductive summer crops. However, heat is developing across western-most portions of the region, but temperatures in primary production areas remain below normal.

On the Plains, developing heat is increasing stress on rangeland, pastures, and summer crops. However, cool, showery conditions are lingering in Montana, while locally heavy showers and thunderstorms are developing along a stationary front in the east-central Plains. In contrast, increasingly hot, dry conditions are causing topsoil moisture to rapidly diminish in parts of central, eastern, and southern Texas.

In the South, a stationary front separates Gulf Coast heat from cooler conditions farther north. Along the front, locally heavy showers are developing from Oklahoma into the Tennessee Valley.

In the West, showers are falling from the Great Basin into the northern Rockies and in the lower Four Corners Region. Dry weather prevails elsewhere, though below-normal temperatures are easing irrigation demands and reducing evaporation rates.
